Internet Referencing

3. The Anatomy of an Internet Reference

Remember the five questions?

  • Who wrote it?
  • When?
  • What's it called?
  • Where was it published?
  • Who published it?

When the work which is referenced is a chapter or article in a larger publication, these questions are answered in the following order:

Author (Year) Title of Chapter/Article. Host publication. City of Publication: Publisher.

Now let's look at the reference for an article in the online edition of The Times, for example:

Webster, B. (2001) London charge is capital for some. The Times [online] London: Times Newspapers Limited, 23/07/01 [last accessed 23/07/01]. Available at http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,2-2001251857,00.html

Examine this carefully, and you'll see that it's structurally the same as any other reference - with some extra information. On the next page, we'll look at the additional information in an internet reference.
