Internet Referencing

9. No title

Sometimes it can be hard to discern the title of of a document you find on the Internet.

These are some guidelines:

  • Always aim to find the title which the author prefers the page to be known as - especially if the webpage is the online version of a printed source
  • If there appears to be no title, look in the title bar of your browser (the very top blue section of the Explorer window, for example).
  • Use your own judgement - for example, on this page from the Arts Educational Schools in London, there is no particular title in evidence, but from looking at the structure of the site, at information on the page and in the title bar, you can deduce that the title should probably be:

Arts Educational School (ca. 2001) Arts Ed - The School of Musical Theatre: Performances [online] London: Arts Educational Schools [last accessed 10/11/01] Available at: http://www.artsed.co.uk/mt/performances.htm

We've already seen an instance of (n.d.) and (ca. 2001). These are ways of dealing with the No Date Problem.
